There is growing tension amongst residents in Port Harcourt, following renewed hostilities between rival cult gangs operating in the Rivers State.
The latest confrontation which occurred Sunday, according to information that is filtering in from the area, is reportedly between two dreaded groups, the Icelanders and their Degbam counterparts.
At least four persons have purportedly died of gunshot wounds in the Okija axis of Diobu, with knowledgeable observers warning that the situation may further escalate.
Already, fear is gradually enveloping some of the residents who live within Mile I, Mile II, Mile III and D-Line areas.
These residents told this publication that they suspect the cult unrest may extend to their otherwise peaceful neighbourhoods if utmost care is not taken.
They are urging the police to step up efforts in order to nip the spread of further violence in the bud.
Our information is that the police have moved in to restore law and order in the affected areas.
The reason for the clash between the Icelanders and Degbam is not yet known, but the Port Harcourt Telegraph reports that the latest incident which is coming close on the heel of recent killings in the Old Township area suggests that a gradual return of gang related violence may be underway.
As at the time of going to press, there was yet to be any reaction on the part of the Rivers State Government.
We have heard that its officials may be studying the situation which may have led to the death of members of the cult movement described as “big fishes” in some circles.
