Breaking: Progressives capture power in Sokoto
… As the State swings from “green’ to “red”
By PHC Telegraph

Sokoto State, a “green” state in Nigeria’s North Western zone which has been under the control of the conservative PDP has flipped.
Results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission Sunday night shows that the State has turned “red”.
It has been won by the opposition All Progressives Congress which has been knocking on the door.
Although the state under the leadership of Governor Aminu Tambuwal, Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, marginally swung victory in the direction of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar in the presidential race about two weeks ago, the results just released indicate that the APC has snatched the state in the governorship race.
Its candidate Ahmed Aliyu, Tambuwal’s former Deputy secured 453,661 votes against PDP’s Saidu Umar who polled 404,632 votes.
For years, political wars have been fought between Conservative and progressive forces right from the days of the National Party of Nigeria, NPN, for the control of the heartbeat of the Caliphate.
In the last governorship election which produced Governor Aminu Tambuwal who is about to finish his second tenue, the PDP won by a slim margin.

The outcome of the election in Sokoto State won by Ahmed Aliyu represents a major upset for the PDP, particularly for the leadership of the party under the Chairmanship of Iyorchia Ayu and the defeated Presidential Candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
Until Sokoto fell to the control of the APC that won the presidential race on February 25, 2023, the State has remained out of reach of the Progressives.
A margin of approximately 40,000 votes separated candidates of the two major parties.

The fall of the PDP in Sokoto is likely to bring smiles to the lips of the G5, a group of Governors who have been seriously angered by Aminu Tambuwal’s betrayal at the National Convention of the party
Tambuwal had mysteriously stepped down at the last minute during the party’s convention, thus paving way for Atiku’s emergence as the presidential candidate against the constitutional provision of the party on power rotation.
