Disu Arrives Louis Edet Amidst Cheers

By PHC Telegraph

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s decision to appoint a new Inspector-General of Police appeared to resonate positively with the rank and file on Wednesday, as Tunji Disu formally assumed office at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

The Louis Edet House — the nerve centre of the Nigeria Police Force — witnessed an unusual wave of enthusiasm as the new police chief’s motorcade drove into the premises. Officers lined up in formation broke into applause and cheers, a scene captured in widely circulated videos that have since gone viral on social media.

Guard of Honour and Symbolic Formalities
On arrival, Disu inspected a ceremonial guard of honour, a longstanding tradition marking the formal transfer of authority at the top echelon of the Force.

Senior officers, including members of the Force Management Team, received him at the entrance before escorting him into the main administrative complex.

The atmosphere, according to officers present, combined relief, expectation and cautious optimism. The departure of the former IGP had generated debate within and outside the Force, particularly around tenure and institutional reforms. Disu’s arrival, by contrast, was framed by many junior officers as a “fresh start.”

What Stood Out
Several elements defined the takeover ceremony:

Visible Morale Boost: Unlike the often restrained tone of similar transitions, rank-and-file officers were openly expressive. The cheering appeared spontaneous rather than choreographed.
Body Language and Composure: Disu maintained a measured posture — acknowledging greetings with brief waves and nods — projecting calm rather than triumphalism.
Symbolism of Unity: Senior officers were seen standing shoulder-to-shoulder during the reception, a subtle signal of continuity within the command structure.
Security Protocols Maintained: Despite the celebratory mood, the ceremony adhered strictly to protocol, underscoring discipline within the institution.

What Disu Said
In his brief remarks to officers and journalists, Disu struck a tone of responsibility and reform.
He thanked President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him and pledged loyalty to the Constitution and the Nigerian people. He emphasised professionalism, intelligence-led policing, and internal discipline as pillars of his tenure.
Among key themes highlighted in his speech:
Restoration of Public Trust: He acknowledged concerns about public perception of the Force and promised to prioritise accountability.
Welfare of Officers: Disu noted that morale and operational effectiveness are tied to improved welfare and working conditions.
Zero Tolerance for Indiscipline: He warned that misconduct would not be condoned, signalling an intention to strengthen internal oversight.
Collaboration: He called for partnership with other security agencies and community stakeholders to address insecurity nationwide.

“Our duty is to the Nigerian people,” he reportedly said. “We must earn their trust daily through professionalism, fairness and courage.”

Expectations Ahead
Disu’s tenure begins at a time when Nigeria faces multifaceted security challenges — from banditry and kidnapping to urban crime and communal tensions.

Within the Force, expectations centre on structural reform, improved welfare packages and clearer operational direction.

While ceremonial cheers do not guarantee institutional transformation, Wednesday’s reception suggests that the new IGP begins his tenure with an important asset: internal goodwill.

Whether that momentum translates into measurable reform will depend on policy decisions in the weeks and months ahead.
