APC’s Power Blocs, What They’re Doing To Create Consensus
By PHC Telegraph

All is now set for the National Convention of the All Progressives Congress, APC, which is expected to take place at the Eagle Square in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
Already, members of the committee responsible for the management of the venue were seen Thursday putting finishing touches.
Our Correspondents report that the Eagle Square has transformed into an arena of blazing party colours, with the ruling party sparing nothing in terms of detail as it plans to throw the doors wide open to delegates.
Behind the scene, the making of a consensus candidate is underway as the APC driven by core power blocs tries to build on its unity of purpose.
From what we are piecing together, there are four recognizable power blocs that are pushing a consensus presidential candidate:
- The Presidency & The Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF): These are the primary architects of the agenda. Their main goal is to ensure a unified front to prevent internal friction and maintain a steady path toward the 2027 cycle.
- The South-South “Unity” Bloc: This group is particularly focused on resolving long-standing factional disputes. There is a heavy emphasis here on “unity of purpose” to stabilize regional leadership, especially within the context of the political landscape in Rivers State.
- South-West Zonal Leadership: This bloc has been a strong advocate for the consensus model as a strategic tool. By aligning on candidates early, they aim to minimize the risk of post-election litigation and internal legal battles.
- The National Working Committee (NWC): Their role is more administrative but essential; they are driving the agenda from an efficiency standpoint, favoring consensus to ensure the convention runs smoothly and without public discord.
Across all these blocs, the shared objective is mitigating risk. By moving away from competitive voting where possible, these groups are attempting to project an image of a party that is “reconciled and ready.”
Our Correspondents say there are talks about the compilation of a “unity list”, with some saying that it might start flying from Friday.
The circulation of the unity list would mean that proponents of the consensus model have won a major victory in hosting a convention in which there is no contest.
