Governor Nyesom Wike who visited the construction site at Mgbuosimini, Rumueme, on Thursday disclosed government’s intention to expand the scope of the ongoing project.
The world class abattoir being built by the State Government is designed to handle the slaughter of 400 cattle as well as 1500 goats and sheep daily.
Addressing the people who converged at the site in course of his inspection of the project, Governor Wike urged support for the contractor in order to ensure that the project is completed on schedule.
“We are almost finishing the slaughter house” , the Governor remarked, “and then we are building a market on this side.”
Wike who has continued delivering projects even as his tenure comes to an end emphasized, “we have to commission it before I leave office.”
“We want to start the park and the market immediately and that will create jobs for us”, Wike revealed.
He further stressed, “I will make sure that those who are around here (residents) will be the direct beneficiaries of this jobs.”
He however, frowned at the slow space of work on the abattoir project which is fully automated with state-of-the- art facilities.
The Governor stated that the extent of work already achieved on the project does not meet his expectation, saying that the entire contract sum for the execution of the job has been paid to the contractor.
According to him, “We have paid hundred percent. I just approved award of contract for the market to compliment the slaughter.”
While agreeing that “the quality of job” is “well done”, Wike stated, “They have told me that before the end of April, they would have completed the abattoir.”
Governor Wike inspected the meat mart, administrative building, internal roads and shore protection work.
Also inspected were the veterinary clinics and the laboratories that are expected to be useful in determining the health of animals before they are slaughtered for human consumption.
The State’s number one citizen who had a moment of reflection over the situation that existed at the old slaughter located within the Trans-Amadi Industrial Layout recalled how traders conducted their activities under unhygienic conditions which were completely unacceptable. “This is a modern abattoir were animals, cows and goats would be killed in a more civilized way”, Governor Wike explained. He vowed that the slaughter of these creatures meant for human consumption would be “done according to international best practices.”
Governor Wike used the opportunity to thank residents of Mgbuosimini community for supporting and voting for PDP in the last general election.
“The incoming governor will not disappoint you people. He will even do better than me with your support. You can go home and sleep with your two eyes close”, he added.
