‍Telecom Giants In Nigeria Are To Pay Compensation To Phone Users

NCC wields big stick as telcos react
By PHC Telegraph

Phone users across the country are heaving huge sighs of relief as news of their eventual protection from the exploitative tendencies of telecom giants by the Nigerian authorities spreads.

They are to receive compensation from service operators who have been cashing in from network interruptions that have left Nigerians angry and flustered.

Poor telecom services have led to widespread complaints from phone users nationwide, with most on social media platforms calling for stiff sanctions against communications firms.

According to information, the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, appears to have broken new grounds. It has moved from a “complaint-based” system to an “automatic” one.

Dr Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman at NCC announced that telephone companies (telcos) must now identify and credit subscribers who suffered from poor service between November 2025 and January 2026.

They are to provide direct credit to affected subscribers, Maida stressed, saying the NCC’s order to telcos is a “compliance obligation” and not a refund from the government.

Following NCC’s intervention, subscribers will receive airtime credits directly to their accounts with a notification explaining exactly why they are being compensated.

Meanwhile, MTN Nigeria has already issued a statement confirming compliance, framing the move as part of their “commitment to customer satisfaction”.

It however disclosed that it is ramping up infrastructure to prevent future fiber cuts and vandalism.

Subscribers are hailing the telecom monitor for a good job, describing it as a positive effort by the regulator to call out erring telcos.
