Cancer and Cardiovascular Diagnostic Treatment Centre ready to open its doors
The Dr Peter Odili Cancer and Cardiovascular Diagnostic Treatment Centre is to be commissioned today in the Rivers State capital.
The Commissioning ceremony will be performed by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero.
Built by the Wike administration, the centre is the first of its kind within the West African subregion.
According to statistics provided by the World Health Organisation’s 2020 report cancer tops the list of killer diseases with nearly 10 million deaths.
The Port Harcourt Telegraph understands that Nigeria has one of the highest cancer mortality rates anywhere in the world.
The Global Cancer Observatory reveals that approximately four out of five cases results in death as a result of the disease.
In Nigeria alone, about 10,000 cancer deaths are recorded annually with 250,000 new cases recorded yearly.
Insiders in the Wike administration say the decision to build a centre for the treatment of cancer is based on the resolve of the Wike administration to reduce the mortality rate that is associated with the disease.
“We anticipate that the health policy of Governor Nyesom Wike will help change the thinking that governments in Nigeria cannot provide qualitative medical facilities.
“Rivers State may in the long become a choice destination for medical tourists. It is clear that the Governor is thinking of the wellness of his people and the overall transformation of a state that he inherited.”
Already, the United States is offering to partner with the Rivers State in the fight against cancer and other diseases.
The cancer centre is among five projects that will be commissioned this week by the Rivers State Government.
Other projects include the Basic Clinical and Clinical Science Faculties Buildings, the Rumuepirikom Flyover, the Nkpolu Oruworokwu Flyover and Nabo Graham Douglas Campus of the Nigerian Law School.
Wike continues to stun even his worst critics with the delivery of quality developmental projects that are being put in place for the benefit of Rivers people in line with the new Rivers vision.
