AS TELEGRAPH PREDICTED, JACK EMERGES CHINDA’S RUNNING MATE
• APC settles for riverine balance

The political calculations surrounding the 2027 governorship contest in Rivers State have begun to fall into place, with Major Jack emerging as running mate to the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Rep. Kingsley Ogundu Chinda.
Jack’s emergence confirms an earlier projection by the PHC Telegraph, which had identified the House of Assembly Majority Leader as one of the politicians strongly positioned to clinch the APC deputy governorship slot.
In its analysis of the unfolding governorship contest, The Telegraph had drawn attention to the delicate balancing act confronting the APC following Chinda’s emergence as its governorship candidate.
The paper reasoned that with Chinda coming from the upland section of Rivers State, political considerations surrounding geographical and ethnic balance were likely to push the party towards a riverine politician for the number two position.
Major Jack, who represents Akuku-Toru Constituency I in the Rivers State House of Assembly, fitted prominently into that calculation.
Now, that projection has materialised.
The APC has confirmed Jack as Chinda’s running mate, effectively producing an upland-riverine combination as the party prepares for what promises to be a fiercely contested governorship election.
WHY JACK?
Jack brings more than geographical balance to the ticket.
As Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, he has accumulated considerable legislative and political experience and belongs to the network of political actors who have played prominent roles in the state’s turbulent politics in recent years.
His Akuku-Toru roots also give the APC ticket a foothold in the riverine axis, where questions of power rotation and representation are expected to feature prominently in the campaign.
The selection consequently appears calculated to broaden the geographical appeal of the Chinda ticket while addressing concerns that could have arisen from fielding two candidates from the upland section of the state.
THE GREAT BALANCING ACT
When The Telegraph examined the emerging political permutations weeks ago, it described the search for running mates as “The Great Balancing Act.”
That description appears even more appropriate now.
Beyond competence and political loyalty, the major parties are confronting Rivers State’s longstanding upland-riverine equation, ethnic considerations and the need to construct tickets capable of attracting support across senatorial districts.
For the APC, the choice of Jack suggests that these calculations weighed heavily in determining who would run alongside Chinda.
It also demonstrates how rapidly the pieces of the 2027 Rivers political chessboard are taking their positions.
With Chinda and Jack now paired, attention will increasingly shift to how the ticket is received across the state — particularly in the riverine communities — and whether the geographical balance that looks attractive on paper can be converted into votes.
For The Telegraph, however, Jack’s emergence settles one question raised in its earlier analysis.
The political arithmetic pointed towards the riverine axis. Major Jack was firmly in the calculation. The APC has now made its choice.
