How did a foreigner facing trial in Nigeria who was being held in custody by security agents escape?

This is the question that many people in and outside the country, including security strategists, are asking as the embarrassing news of the escape of Nadeem Anjarwalla from detention spreads.

It is not yet known how he managed to flee Nigeria, but security personnel who were keeping watch over him while he was incarcerated have been picked up by the system.

They are being quizzed even as the country turns attention to the Interpol for help in order to secure support from the international community that will lead to the re-arrest of the suspect.

Anjarwalla who has been in and out of the courtroom since he was arrested is a top executive of Binance, a firm that has been widely implicated globally for dedicating its financial platforms to the transmission of funds earned through acts of terrorism.

On Friday while security agents were busy concentrating efforts on what best to do to effect the release of more than 137 young Nigerian students held hostage by terrorist gangs in Kaduna and Sokoto, the Binance chief fled the country.

A statement issued by the office of the National Security Adviser, NSA, has since confirmed the incident.

According to information emanating from the office of the National Security Adviser, the foreign national fled with a smuggled passport.

A statement signed by Zakari U. Mijinyawa, Head, Strategic Communication read, “The Office of the National Security Adviser confirms that Nadeem ANJARWALLA, a suspect in the ongoing criminal probe into the activities of Binance in Nigeria has escaped from lawful custody on Friday, 22 March 2024.

“Upon receiving this report, this office took immediate steps, in conjunction with relevant security agencies , MDAs, as well as the international community, to apprehend the suspect.

“Security agencies are working with Interpol for an international arrest warrant on the suspect ”

The statement further revealed that preliminary investigation conducted “shows that Mr Anjarwalla fled Nigeria using a smuggled passport.”

According to the office of the NSA, “The personnel responsible for the custody of the suspect have been arrested, and a thorough investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances that led to his escape from lawful detention.

“Recall that the Federal Government of Nigeria, like other governments around the world, has been investigating money laundering and terrorism financing transactions perpetrated on the Binance currency exchange platform.

“Until his escape, Nadeem Anjarwalla, who holds British and Kenyan nationalities and serving as Binance’s Africa regional manager, was being tried by Nigerian courts.

“The suspect escaped while under a 14-day remand order by a court in Nigeria. He was scheduled to appear before the court again on 4 April 2024.”

The statement urged Nigerians and the international community “to provide whatever information” With their reach which could enable ” law enforcement agencies to apprehend the suspect.”
