Segun Arinze: Sexual Harassment Exists Everywhere

By PHC Telegraph

A veteran Nigerian actor, Segun Arinze says cases of sexual harassment which make headline in Nollywood circles from time to time are not restricted to the film industry.

“It is everywhere”, Arinze said Wednesday afternoon on Arise Television in response to a question.

Fielding questions on NewsDay, a talks programme, the well known actor who literally downplayed the issue of sexual harassment said many female actors and producers in Nigeria have convincingly come out with spectacular acts and films.

He noted that he is absolutely proud of their contributions to the advancement of the film industry and creative arts.

Arinze frowned at suggestions that Netflix has allegedly withdrawn from Nigeria over differences between filmmakers and owners of the digital platform, arguing that such a claim is completely untenable.

He said before now funds were extended by digital platforms operating in the country to some Nollywood film producers to support their production efforts.

But he explained that in place of offering financial backing to filmmakers, digital platforms are rather paying for Nigerian films that meet requisite standards set by them.

He said it was ridiculous for anyone to describe an actor as a Netflix, cinema or YouTube actor, saying actors by the nature of their professional calling are persons trained to act.

Arinze gave Kudos to the film industry in Nigeria and urged filmmakers, including producers and directors to pool resources together in order to avert the stress caused by pressure to fund films.

Arinze admitted that some level of politics has crept into Nollywood circles, adding however that the creative sector would be better of without politics
