Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has flagged off the construction of internal roads at Elelenwo in the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area as part of his first 100 days in office.
Speaking during the flag off ceremony on Thursday, Fubara restated his resolve to build on the foundation already laid in the State under the auspices of the new Rivers vision kick-started by his predecessor.
“Today, we are here to do something unusual”, Fubara remarked, “It is unusual because when you mark first one hundred days in office, it is not just commissioning of projects, but we want to start adding flag-off of projects.
“So, we are adding this Elelenwo internal roads as part of our programme for our first one hundred days in office.
“You are aware of our journey from the first day that we took oath of office, we made promises to the good people of Rivers State that we are not going to lower the momentum for any reason.”
But the State’s number one citizen maintained that his administration would “continue to add value to what we met believing that the only way we can sustain the strength of our party is to contribute positively to the lives of our people.”
He stressed that it was for this reason that his administration approached the State House of Assembly for additional funds to enable it meet its obligations to the people.
“The 2023 budget that we inherited was about N500Bn. Because of the sensitive nature of projects we nominated for the expansion and development of our dear State, we sought the approval from the State House of Assembly that graciously approved an estimated budget, at that time, of N200Bn, which we added to make N700Bn.
“If you divide what we met, you can see that we are doing about 80 percent of the proposed budget of 2023 that we inherited”, Fubara explained.

He recalled that as a young man, he started life in Elelenwo. He said that as a result of his early life, he has cultivated an emotional attachment to the area.
The Governor expressed confidence that the internal roads when completed will create greater access within the community.
Fubara expressed government’s intention to wade into existing differences between the Elelenwo people and their neighbours from Eleme.
Providing the description of the project, Rivers State Commissioner for Works, Dakorinama George-Kelly said there are 26 separate roads in Elelenwo community marked out for reconstruction.
He revealed that the total length of the entire roads under construction is 25.12 Kilometers with a completion period of six months.
