Nanloon Daniel, new Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly.
A new Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Nanloong Daniel, has been unanimously elected in place of the former occupant of the office.
Gabriel Dewan, the outgone speaker officially resigned on Wednesday, July 2, following the imbalance that his rise to the position of speaker created on the floor of parliament.
The 24-member House which sat at the temporary Assembly Complex situated at the Old Government House ratified the election of Daniel as the new speaker.
According to information reaching our news desk, the election of the Speaker occurred behind closed-doors during an emergency meeting attended by the State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang.
Also in attendance at the meeting was the former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Gabriel Dewan.
Daniel, a former Majority Leader in the 9th Assembly representing Mikang State Constituency was unanimously elected by his colleagues.
Insiders say that Dewan’s resignation has been expected following what observers see as a fundamental imbalance in the power equation within the House.
Dewan, a lone member of the Young Progressives Party, YPP, was elected after the Appeal Court sacked the 16 members elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Until the intervention of the Court of Appeal which at the time altered the dynamics of the game, Moses Thomas Sule led the Plateau State House of Assembly as the Speaker.
We have learnt that the Deputy Speaker Gwotta Ajang presided at the emergency session which ushered in Speaker Daniel.
