Governor Siminalayi Fubara: Under pressure to decide Rivers State’s political future

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State is reportedly under growing pressure to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Telegraph gathered that APC leaders are making overtures to a number of governors across the country, including Fubara, to switch allegiance — moves said to be driven by “state interest.”

At a recent land donation ceremony for a federal housing project, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State suggested that his state’s political alignment with the APC was motivated by the benefits of closer ties with the federal government.

In Rivers, political observers say a similar push is building. While the PDP continues to battle internal crises, the APC has been making steady inroads into the South South.

Commenting on the state of the opposition party, PHC Telegraph Publisher Ogbonna Nwuke said on Atlantic Television’s Open Conversation:

“This is not the Democratic Party we know. It is in a coma — a diabetic coma.”

With conflicting court rulings and rival factions loyal to Governor Seyi Makinde and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike suspending each other’s loyalists, uncertainty now clouds the PDP’s planned national convention in Ibadan.

Until recently, the South South was considered a PDP stronghold. But political dynamics have changed under President Bola Tinubu, with Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Bayelsa reportedly tilting toward the APC, while Edo and Cross River were taken at the polls.

Rivers remains the only South South state still technically under PDP control.

A source close to Government House told The Telegraph:

“Oga will cross over to the APC. I’m optimistic — it’s just a matter of time.”

Elder statesman Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe has also urged Fubara to join the APC, while a former senator said,

“Fubara has shown direction since he came back. We will all support him.”

For now, the governor’s focus remains on project delivery. Several key projects are expected to be commissioned before the year ends, with others due by March next year.

Insiders describe the relationship between President Tinubu and Governor Fubara as “cordial and fatherly” — a signal, many say, that Rivers’ interests at the federal level are being well protected.
