The Great Rivers Pivot: Fubara’s ‘Family’ Election

• What could this mean for Nyesom Wike?

PORT HARCOURT — Voters in two state constituencies – Ahoada East II and Khana II – are turning out about now for today’s bye-elections scheduled to fill existing vacancies in the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Reports from the field indicate materials required for the elections have made their way to various voting centres.

We understand the atmosphere is peaceful although security operatives are on ground to protect the electoral process and ensure the safety of voters in Khana and Ahoada East who are performing their civic duty.

“As voters converge at the polls today, February 21, 2026”, a political strategist said in Port Harcourt, “the ballot papers might say “APC,” but the victory is being scripted by the Brick House, not the FCT Minister’s office.”

Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s declaration that today’s election is a “family affair” is a masterclass in political irony.

Having formally crossed over to the APC late last year, Fubara is no longer the “rebel governor” fighting from the outside; he is now the landlord of the “turn-key project” – the very party – Nyesom Wike sought to deliver to the President.

In Rivers, “Total Votes Cast” has historically been a tool of dominance. By ensuring a smooth, high-volume return for the APC today, Fubara isn’t just winning seats; he is demonstrating to the Presidency that he, not Wike, controls the tap of Rivers’ votes.

While the media often focuses on “PDP loyalists,” the real casualty of Fubara’s APC conversion is Nyesom Wike’s leverage.

  • The Middleman is Out: Wike’s value to the APC was his ability to deliver a “hostile” state. Now that Fubara is the APC’s “authentic leader” in Rivers, Wike’s role as the intermediary may become ‘structurally redundant’.
  • The Legislative Truce: The Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly recently halted impeachment proceedings. This wasn’t a victory for Wike; it was a surrender to the reality that Fubara now enjoys the same “Presidential Protection” Wike once brandished.

”The pain doesn’t belong to the PDP anymore—they’ve already lost the state,” says a high-ranking political strategist. “The pain is Wike’s. He built a house (the APC structure in Rivers) only for Fubara to move in, change the locks, and invite the President for dinner.”

Today’s Numbers: The Victory Margin

Observers who are watching the scene say a landslide for the APC in the bye elections is largely predictable.

They say the opposition does not appear, at least on paper, to have a strong foothold in Rivers where a changing political landscape and a “rainbow coalition”, which definitely includes the State Governor is working in the field to increase the electoral fortune of the ruling party.

From every indication, Fubara is in charge of the delivery vehicle, something that the APC leadership appears to have wanted from the beginning.

Nonetheless, the anticipated landslide today serves a dual purpose:

  1. It confirms Fubara’s total capture of the state APC structure.
  2. It proves that Rivers can be “delivered” to the center without the usually chaotic “warfare” of the past.
