Timipre Sylva, Minister of State responsible for the Ministry of Petroleum, has raised a candidate for the forthcoming APC primaries. He is David Lyon who is believed to be one of the major sponsors of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Bayelsa State. Lyon is to confront a former Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and Minister of State, Ministry of Agriculture, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri. A former Ag. Governor and Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Wenipre Subarugu had earlier been tipped by party supporters as the possible candidate of the APC until Sylva made his pick. Sylva’s camp which claims that Lokpobiri is being backed by external forces outside Bayelsa accuse him of doing very little to support the party, a claim that Lokpobiri strongly denies. Sylva who was apparently not in the running for the Petroleum Ministry emerged as the President’s last minute choice. Although analysts are trying to make sense of the development, there are persons who think that the elevation of Sylva to the Petroleum Ministry might be an indication of the plan by the APC to seize Bayelsa State by all means. Already, signs that the PDP in Bayelsa is headed for the cliff are popping up. Seen as a charismatic leader in some circles, Sylvia might become a rallying point of the Ijaw nation who appear to think that President Muhammadu Buhari has finally given them a pride of place. Most Ijaw leaders, according to what we have heard converged at his Abuja residence shortly after he was sworn in as the junior minister in the Petroleum Ministry by the President. The portfolio of Minister of Petroleum is currently held by the President himself.
