Former World No.1, Sarena Williams Tuesday took Sharapova to the cleaners, winning two straight sets to advance to the next stage of the US Open. Both players were drawn in the opener watched by large crowds who turned out to witness the fight of the female titans. Williams won the first set 6 – 1 and went ahead to claim the second set by the same margin. It would be the 19th triumph recorded over Sharapova, the five- time Gram slam winner by the former world champion. Sarena said afterwards that she was inspired by the fans and the zeal to play against a tough opponent to get to the finish line. In the men’s single encounter, Roger Federer overcame a 4-6 defeat in the first set to win little known Sumit Nagal. The former world number one who continues to stun tennis buffs with his fascinating approach to the game took the remaining three sets after screwing all the nuts in place. Although Nagal played fine tennis, his legs couldn’t get him ahead of the old warhorse who appeared determined to go for a sixth in the US Open. He had earlier won it five times. Meanwhile Djokovic, current Wotld No1 defeated Carballes Baena to book a place for himself in the next round.
