What could compel a trigger-happy-policeman to open fire on a defenseless female colleague who was on duty discharging her responsibility to society?
That’s something the police in Rivers State are struggling very hard to unravel as the command launches a high level investigation into the murder of Sergeant Lovender Elekwachi.
Already, Sergeant Bitrus Osaiah and two others who were with him at the time of the incident have been placed under arrest.
They are being grilled by detectives who have directives to get to the bottom of the senseless murder of the female police sergeant.
“The Rivers State Police Command regrets to announce the death of W/Sgt Lovender Elekwachi who until her untimely death was serving at Eneka Division and was posted to the Eneka roundabout on traffic duties”, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, Public Relations Officer said in a statement.
“The late Woman Sergeant was shot while controlling traffic by Sergeant Bitrus Osaiah” who is attached to the Rivers State Task Force on Decongestion.
“Two other members of the Task Force have also been arrested and are being questioned. The Hilux vehicle belonging to the Task Force has been impounded and the corpse of the Woman Sergeant deposited in the mortuary”, Omoni disclosed.
In the meantime, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Joseph G. Mukan, has ordered full investigation into the matter.
The new CP who appealed for calm as the police goes into action assured that the interest of justice would be served.
