The Police has finally dispelled rumours making the rounds that some policemen who were drafted to the Port Harcourt residence of a former  Acting Managing Director of the NDDC were there illegally.
Nyesom Wike,  Governor of Rivers State had stormed the residence Thursday, ordered the policemen out of the premises and taken the former NDDC boss into protective custody.
Pictures of the Governor’s action, seemingly in protection of a Rivers citizen has since gone viral.
But the Rivers State Police Command has disclosed that the officers who were wrongly tagged were on official assignment from Abuja.
It is not clear if they were at the residence of the former NDDC boss to arrest her or offer protection, given what may look like risk factor associated with what is surrounding the affairs of the Commission she once headed.
The Police confirmed that the the policemen who were chased away by the Rivers Governor belonged the IGP Monitoring team.
Nnamdi Omoni, a DSP who is responsible for Public Relations under the Rivers State Police Command said in a swift reaction that claims that the officers and men seen at the scene were properly accredited.
The statement, “the reference  indicating that the Officers were there without the directive of the CP nor the IGP is  preposterous and most unfortunate., hence should be discoutenanced and disregarded.”
The Police statement further explained, “they went to her residence with Mobile Policemen, suggesting of course that they were there on official duty and not illegal duty as speculated.
“They proceeded to her residence, they observed due protocols and requisite standard operating procedures, including going through the processes of arriving themselves at the Headquarters with their Investigation Activities duly signed and approved by the Commissioner of Police, CP Joseph G Mukan.”
The police statement has finally removed doubts that some persons may have been on a sinister mission to abduct of Rivers State.
Could there be something known to the authorities which warranted the dispatch of security operatives to Nunieh’s residence ?
Is it possible that  Nunieh in whose compound the policemen where knew anything about the mission?
Was she trying to avoid a police invitation by turning to Governor Wike for help?
More events are likely to play out in the days ahead.
Already, Joi Nunieh is testifying before the House of Representatives Committee through a digital platform.
