Serious crisis may be brewing underground in the PDP where the posture of South South Governors over the mining of gold in Zamfara State is generating serious disaffection.
The South South Governors are alleging that the Zamfara State Government is exercising control over mining activities, meaning that the action, if it is true, contradicts existing protocols that are backed by law.
Both the Zamfara and Federal Governments have hotly denied claims that are being made, saying they are largely misleading and untrue.
A recent explosion involving oil facilities in the Niger Delta region has occurred at a time the Federal Government is struggling to keep the economy of the nation afloat.
Most Northern Governors see the development as something which may have been instigated by the attitude of Governors of the South South.
There is however no proof of their direct involvement in the act of economic sabotage carried out by persons suspected to be Niger Delta militants.
The South South has been agitating for the control of their resources.
Although the South South might not have all the facts, the leaders of the region have been led to believe that the Zamfara State Government may have secured direct mining rights from the Federal Government.
Within the PDP, a fight which may destroy the basis of party unity is gradually developing. between certain Northern Governors and Governors of South South states.
These governors, we have learnt through highly authoritative sources are urging PDP leaders to call the Governors of the South South to order.
Governor Bello Matawelle has publicly warned that he may reconsider his membership of the PDP if the party does not rein in its governors from the South South.

Matawelle broke the news of his possible exit from the PDP in a story published for the first time by currentmatters.blog.
The governor who spoke to current matters said as members of the same party, the South South governors should have been the ones to have first hand understanding of the situation if they had contacted him instead of sponsoring and buying a cheap controversy of non existing ownership or control of gold by the government of Zamfara State.
Matawalle explained that natural mineral deposits belong to the Federal Government.
He acknowledged that it was his administration that invited the federal government to harness the abundant resources in the state for purposes of diversifying the nation’s economy.
Quipping at the attitude of South South governors whom he accused of acting in a divisive manner, Matawelle remarked, “We have 32 quarries and most of them are owned by people from the Eastern part of the country. They have never paid a Kobo to the state government, let alone to the federal government.”
“We never claimed the whole of Zamfara is for Zamfara,We consider people from other ethnic groups as brothers. But what we see with our brothers from other states is the reverse,
“Look at what the South South governors are doing, mentioning my name that since I harness the gold reserves, they too will control their crude oil and I wonder where this is coming from”, Matawelle further noted.
“I thought because we are all members of the same party that we are brothers, but with what those South South governors are doing, my perception about brotherhood has changed and I don’t have to look too far to know who the enemy is”, the Zamfara Governor observed.
He advised the South South governors to concentrate on delivering dividends of democracy to their people, relying on immense opportunities that are available in the oil sector rather than chasing shadows.
“They have modular refineries, legalized, that could boost their states’ revenues. So, why don’t they take advantage of that and help their people with that instead of chasing shadows?”
Matawalle advised the governors of the oil- rich South South states to focus their attention on helping their people with the accruing resources at their disposal and stop fanning the embers of disunity in the country.

The governor saluted the defection of Governor Dave Umahi to the All Progressives Congress ( APC), noting that he did the right thing as it was the same APC Federal Government that came to defend him(Matawalle) with records of the gold mining when members of his own party vilified him.
He added that if the governors in the South South region are not made to retrace their steps, and the spirit of unity is not rekindled, the PDP might be a shadow of itself as he along with other governors would leave the party.
Four Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, according to what the Port Harcourt Telegraph has heard, may pull out from the party if utmost care is not taken.
They are aggrieved by comments that are credited to the South South governors over the exploration of raw gold in Zamfara.
Our findings further reveal that Zamfara is interested in royalties that would be accruable to it just like the South South states, meaning that securing the 13% associated with the principle of derivation is what is important to the Matawelle administration.
Blessed with gold and copper, the Zamfara State Government is equally hoping that the exploitation of those resources would open up the State economy, and create wealth as well as employment for the people.
He disclosed that most of the quarries are owned by Southerners particularly those from the South East.
But there are indications that what Matawelle, a former member of the National Assembly desires are understanding and cooperation between the people of Zamfara and other Nigerians.
“We have somebody from the South East who has multibillion naira industry in Zamfara State,
“We have somebody also from Anambra who is taking copper from Zamfara State, mining, and has over 200 hectares of Land and has developed all the land with about 2000 employees.”
“Tell me Is there any Hausaman that can go to the South East and get even a thousand Square metres? But we are liberal ,otherwise I could have asked them to leave the state.
Matawalle said he never claimed ownership of the Zamfara gold so he doesn’t understand the noise about ownership.
