Wike’s top hands plot takeover, hold secret meeting
As members of the Peoples Democratic Party in Rivers State begin the search for a governorship candidate who would fly the party’s flag in 2023, a group of persons who could pass as the~ who-is-who in Governor Wike’s camp has reportedly held a secret meeting.
Incidentally, not many political heavyweights who are usually seen hanging around the Governor in public, including prominent elders and technocrats, were aware of the meeting.
The Port Harcourt Telegraph has learnt that the meeting attended by key Wike loyalists took place at the residence of the former State Party Chairman, Bro Felix Obuah.
We cannot confirm if the Governor had any knowledge about the meeting or the reason why it was called.
But those conversant with the way Wike operates claim nothing happens in PDP circles without him knowing.
The issue of who should succeed Wike, despite several warnings by the Governor against political activity, has been generating serious interest within the PDP.
A source who attended the meeting told this publication, “Many known faces were not invited. Some of us at the meeting were shocked to learn that most top politicians seen around the Governor are not part of the inner cacus that is emerging.
“They are being described as the first ladder of leadership under the Governor”, another well placed source whispered to this publication.
The Telegraph which has been monitoring political developments in the State has obtained a list of the Governor’s men who were present at Obuah’s residence for the said meeting.
Those physically present at the meeting included Mr Tammy Danagogo, the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Emeka Woke, the Governor’s Chief of Staff, the Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the Majority Leader of the State House of Assembly.
Others include Rt. Hon Kingsley Chindah, Hon Dumle Maol, Mr marcus Nle Eji, Mr felix Nweke, Mrs Blessing Eji, Bariene Thomas and one Mr Norde who purportedly stood in for Hon Dum Dekor.
Nbina Jacobson, Kelechi Worgu, the lawmaker representing Omuma were equally amongst a host of others who were present.
They are believed to have agreed to keep their deliberations secret but we heard that the conversation centered on the issue of who will fly the PDP flag come 2023.
They however insisted, according to our source, to ensure that the choice of a flag bearer should be restricted to members of the group.
Strangely, none of the serving Senators was considered fit to be part of the meeting that the State Party Chairman, Ambassador Desmond Akawor did not attend.
An insider who described the Senators as “follow-follow” said what this shows “is that they do not belong to the Governor’s inner circle.”
“Wike has grown tired of them”, the insider revealed, “they are like sucked oranges.”
“It is true that a lot of people following the Governor are not part of his team”, the source added.
There are indications that the Party Chairman may not have made the meeting as a result of health related issues.
Some PDP members are alleging that Akawor may have contacted the Coronavirus, but the Telegraph is yet to obtain an independent confirmation of the claim which is making the rounds.
