The Bayelsa State Government has vowed to tackle some of the natural challenges that are facing the people of Ogbogoro.
Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State made the commitment after he visited the erosion site at Ogbogoro
Ogbogoro is located in the Yenagoa Local Government Area.
The Governor expressed his empathy towards the people and assured them of the resolve of his administration to intervene in order to arrest the gradual degradation of the environment.
The Governor’s visit, we are informed, was prompted by the outcry of the people in the area who are calling for help before it is too late.
The situation in the area has become so deplorable, according to sources in the area, with one of them saying, “We are concerned about the pace of erosion in our area. We now live in extreme fear of what may happen to us in the years to come.”
Given the topography of Bayelsa State and the huge influence that weather conditions have on the environment, erosion has transformed into a major threat faced by communities in the Niger Delta.
Said an expert, “With sea levels rising globally and the impact of the greenhouse effect felt in parts of the world, deltaic areas such as the Niger Delta are fighting for survival.”
“Yesterday, I visited the Ogbogoro Erosion site in Yenagoa LGA. I want to share in the pains of the people”, Governor Diri emphasised.
“Our intervention shall be immediate and I have just directed the Ministry of Works to swing into action by first opening up the natural canal and other actions shall follow”, the Governor added.
