Lauretta Onochie has dismissed claims that she is still a card carrying member of the APC.
She said while facing a Senate Committee screening that she has since stepped aside from the ruling party.
The nomination of the former presidential aide had sparked off widespread reactions from interests groups, including the PDP which staged protests outside the gate of the National Assembly.
The PDP alleged Onochie is part of a rigging machine that the APC is carefully putting together for the 2023 election and said her inclusion as an INEC national Commissioner would cast serious aspersions on the integrity of the Commission.
It joined some civil society groups that have been campaigning against Onochie to urge the Senate to jettison her nomination.
The nominee who appeared before senators Thursday, however disclosed that she did not take part in the recent revalidation exercise conducted by the ruling party.
According to her, she had withdrawn from partisan politics after the President won his re-election in 2019.
Asked if her nomination does not amount to a deliberate infringement of existing provisions pertaining to the promotion of federal character, Mrs Onochie explained that a female Deltan serving in INEC took her slot from Cross River State where she is married.
The senators eventually left her off the hook and allowed her to take a bow.
