Anti – Secondus supporters may have put up quite a performance in unnerving the National Chairman of the PDP,  but the man wanted out of the way, has turned out to be a cat with nine lives.

But Prince Uche Secondus, one of the longest serving chairmen of the PDP will take a bow in October, two months before his tenure is to end.

Accordingly, the National  Convention of the party which was originally billed for December this year would now take place in October.

This  is the verdict reached after a meeting of PDP Governors and the subsequent consultations they had with other stakeholders,  including  Prince Uche Secondus himself.

Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum urged warring factions  to come together, stressing “We have no party to defect to… no government to defect to.”

A statement issued by Tambuwal on behalf of the PDP Governors and other stakeholders (see full details below) directed, “all parties should sheath their sword in the greater interest of the PDP”

The statement said there is “the need to rescue Nigeria from the avoidable National malaise and drift occasioned by the APC administration.”

It also directed that “all processes leading to an early National Convention in October be immediately activated by relevant Party organs, especially National Executive Committee (NEC).”

Governor Nyesom Wike who has been away from Port Harcourt to lead the revolt against the National Chairman of his party would return home half fulfilled.

But, he would have to deal with the hard truth, the fact that Secondus and not a caretaker committee, would be in the saddle to oversee the conduct of the convention.

The fear of what Secondus is likely to do at the state and national level if he remains as the Chairman on the road to the National Convention prompted the rebellion by Wike and his supporters.

“His adversaries”, a political analyst in Port Harcourt said “have somehow masked their real intent by accusing Secondus of incompetence, but their motive” he told the PORT HARCOURT TELEGRAPH “was to seize control of the party machine for their own purpose.”

There are mixed reactions among PDP members across the country, following the decisions reached, but they however agree that the intervention of major stakeholders in order to arrest the drift might help to restore calm.
