Lawyers from across the entire country are holding their yearly Bar Conference in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

It would last one week.

According to the itinerary issued by the Nigeria Bar Association, NBA, the opening ceremony of the conference would take place Monday.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State who is himself a lawyer would be among legal luminaries expected to grace the occasion.

The theme of this year’s event is “Taking The Lead”.

Observers say the choice of the theme is apt because it is coming against the backdrop of growing concerns over cases of judicial abuse involving judges and senior lawyers.

While in Port Harcourt, Nigerian lawyers would seize the opportunity to brainstorm on a wide range of issues pertaining to the promotion of the rule of law.

They are also expected to find time out of their crowded schedule to visit places of interest in  the State.

This is the second time that the Rivers State would be hosting the Bar Conference and the NBA under the watch of Governor Wike.

The Rivers State Government is currently constructing a new law school in Port Harcourt.

Sources say work is proceeding at a fast pace on site, with the Wike administration promising senior lawyers and legal educators that it would deliver on the project before it leaves office.
