Officiating Priests in Rivers State are expected today to join in efforts that are being made to curtail the spread of COVID 19

To this end, they are henceforth to ensure a 50% cut in the number of persons who flood their churches to worship.

This is however, due to a State Government directive urging citizens to reduce their exposure in public.

Governor Nyesom Wike who issued the order warned that there has been a gradual increase in the number of reported cases of the disease in the State since the Omicron variant was reported.

According to him, an alarming figure of no fewer than 100 COVID-19 cases is recorded daily in the State.

Official statistics obtained from the NCDC show that Rivers State 260 cases on Wednesday, 69 on Thursday and 119 COVID-19 cases on Friday.

Overall,  the state had recorded 12,990 cases while the number of those who have lost their lives is put at 154.

Statisticians say that Rivers is the third most affected by the virus, after Lagos and FCT Abuja.

Already, the Rivers State Government has ordered the cancelation of a State banquet planned as part of the end of year festivities.

The Government cited rising cases of Omicron variant as the reason.
