While in that country, the Chiefs of Defence Staff are expected to evaluate the situation on ground and report their findings to the leaders of West African governments.

The Heads of State also suspended the country from the sub – regional body, following the coup.

They directed the Burkinabe military to release the country’s president who is being held in custody and take immediate steps to restore democracy.

In the meantime, stiff sanctions are to be imposed on the military dictatorship that has taken over control of government.

Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama who addressed the media shortly after the virtual meeting revealed that another high powered ECOWAS delegation, comprising of Foreign Ministers, would visit that country to engage the new leaders and assess the situation.

In a sharp reaction to the meeting of ECOWAS leaders, the military authorities in Burkina Faso has assured they would restore power to civilians when the time is right.

There were jubilations on the street after the soldiers struck, a reaction which suggested that ordinary citizens in that country may have welcomed the coup.
