… Atiku, Wike talk behind closed doors.
Atiku at table with Wike and other Governors in the UK… time to talk heart to heart.
Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and the flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party,, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar have met in the UK.
Details of what was discussed between both men are not yet known, but the meeting may not be unconnected with the ongoing crisis in the party and how to resolve it
At the centre of the conversation, some say, was what to do about the demands put on the table by the group that is led by the Rivers Governor.
Incidentally, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State and Governor Makinde of Oyo State who are in Britain with Governor Wike were in the meeting.
Atiku had departed the country as soon as news filtered in that Governor Wike and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, flagbearer of the APC have met in London.
Media reports had indicated at the time that Atiku had flown into Paris, the French capital.
The reason for his sudden trip out of the country was not disclosed.
Atiku
Thursday, Atiku and Governor Wike were seen in London having discussions one-on-one, obviously about a party that they both have strong stakes in.
In Nigeria, as soon as the Wike-Atiku meeting broke, there were sighs of relief, particularly within PDP circles
The meeting raised hopes in some quarters that the peace process initiated by leaders of the PDP has not broken down completely
It was perhaps, a strong indication that the PDP has not given up on the Governor of Rivers State and members of his team, which includes five governors, who are insisting on the correction of certain imbalances.
Top on the agenda of the
Wike team is a request asking Dr Iyorchia Ayu to quit as the National chairman of the major opposition party.
<span;>The Wike team say the removal of Ayu which will return the chairmanship of the South would be sufficient for its members spread all over the country to throw their weight behind the Atiku campaign.
Thus far, Atiku is yet to constitute the membership of his campaign organization despite pressure from hawks in his camp who think the party can do without Wike.
Strategists within the PDP are hoping that the encounter between Atiku and Wike may break the deadlock and pave the way for Wike and his political associates to join the campaign team.
Wike, it has been reported, earlier held talks with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the United Kingdom.
Reports say that the outcome of the meeting which could spell doom for the PDP if the party fails to reconcile was largely fruitful.
Atiku, Tinubu intensify their hunt for Wike’s support
The accord purportedly reached between Wike and Tinubu may have forced the PDP to make last moment efforts to stop Wike and his political allies from rocking the boat.
It is possible, now that Atiku is talking directly to Wike instead of relying on shadowy committees, that the PDP if it agrees to ask Ayu out of office might be able to remove obstacles that are militating against party cohesion.
London has provided grounds for conversations in the last few days, which may determine the future not just of Nigeria, but for the major parties that are angling for power in the forthcoming General Elections.
Attention will turn to Nigeria in a couple of days as conversations continue within and his outside the PDP as proponents of peace intensify their efforts to put off the raging flames that have been at the centre of a brewing conflict.
It is not yet known when Governor Wike will return home, but his handling of the situation has aroused the admiration of the Port Harcourt Press.
Speaking when its members met with the State Chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Desmond Akawor in Port Harcourt, the leader of the delegation, Chief Ogbonna Nwuke said leading newspaper Publishers in the State were happy with the Governor’s stance over the correction of imbalances that are extremely against Southern interests in the PDP.
