Why Rivers lecturers shunned ASUU – Wike

The Rivers State Governor, Barrister Nyesom Wike has explained why lecturers teaching in state owned tertiary institutions are not part of the ASUU strike.

Governor Wike made the disclosure at the commissioning of the Sattelite

Campus of the Faculty of Agriculture and the flag off of the construction of living quarters for academic and non academic staff.

An administrative structure at the Abara Campus built by the State Government under Gov. N.E. Wike. 
A Faculty block commissioned by the Rivers State Government for use by  students of Rivers State University. 
Another block of classrooms built by the Gov Wike administration at the campus of the Faculty of Agriculture Abara in the Etche Local Government. 

He noted that when Rivers lecturers were fighting for their welfare, ASUU did not come to their rescue.

Governor Wike disclosed that lecturers teaching in Rivers State universities earn more than their counterparts in federal institutions.

According to him, the Rivers State Government through direct negotiations met the requirements of lecturers who were demanding better wages and teaching conditions.

Governor Wike who expressed satisfaction that lecturers in his State were actively imparting knowledge to their students wondered why anyone could have expected them to down tools.

He said Rivers State would continue to blaze the trail in transforming the educational sector for the benefit and advancement of youths of school age.

Wike said the whole idea behind the expansion of the Rivers State University via the creation of satellite campuses was to enhance learning conditions.

He also revealed that it was part of a deliberate policy to use the expansion of educational infrastructure as a tool to grow rural economy and create jobs.

Earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Nlerum S. Okogbule had lauded the Governor for his multi-sectoral approach to the development of the State.

Professor Okogbule said the entire  university community was impressed by Governor Wike’s contributions to the improvement of the quality of education.

He however asked for the establishment of a police post directly opposite the campus, a request that the State Governor quickly approved.

In a related development, the Rivers State Government  under the watch of Governor Wike will today at Rumuche in the Emohua Local Government Area commission another campus of the Rivers State University, RSU.

It would be the second campus to be built by the present administration.

The third also built by the present administration will be commissioned tomorrow at Ahoada in the Ahoada East Local Government Area.
