President Donald Trump has been sworn in as the 47th president of the United States.

He is the second president in US history to serve nonconsecutive terms  and the first convicted felon to hold the office.

Delivering his speech at the inauguration, Trump vowed to take back the Panama Canal, suggesting he would seize it by force if need be.

According to the 47th President, the Panama Canal “has foolishly been given to the country of Panama after the United States — the United States, I mean, think of this, spent more money than ever spent on a project before and lost 38,000 lives in the building of the Panama Canal.”

“And above all”, Trump noted, “China is operating the Panama Canal. And we didn’t give it to China. We gave it to Panama, and we’re taking it back.”

On his proposed tariffs plan, the new C-in-C declared, “Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich other countries, we will tariff and tax foreign countries to enrich our citizens.”

“It will be massive amounts of money pouring into our treasury coming from foreign sources”, Trump stressed.

Expectedly, Trump delivered a speech which was reminiscent of his first inaugural address.

He pledged to impose hard-line border and immigration measures and restore the greatness and power of America, saying he intends to ensure a major increase in domestic manufacturing, and enhance energy production.

Trump would be expected to sign executive orders which would end years of birthright citizenship, stop the catch and release of detainees while they await immigration court dates, and continue to build a wall on the southern border.

Also in line with his campaign promises, President Trump would endorse executive orders that would make it US policy to  recognise only male and female sexes.

He announced that his administration would do away with diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives introduced by the federal government, and create a new Department of Government Efficiency.

Earlier, Vice President JD Vance also took the oath of office.

Minutes before he stepped out of office, Biden announced a sweeping pardon for several family members, including his brothers and sister, for “any nonviolent offenses” over the last decade.

In taking the decision, he said he was acutely aware that partisan attacks on them would continue not because of any wrongdoing on their part.
