Nyesom Wike: Workers down tool under him

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, was on Monday reportedly prevented from accessing his office as workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) embarked on an indefinite strike in Abuja.

The strike action, which grounded activities across key FCT offices, was called by aggrieved workers protesting unresolved welfare and remuneration issues. As early as Monday morning, secretariats and administrative buildings within the FCT were shut, with workers withdrawing their services.

Unconfirmed reports indicated that the protesters locked the gates of the FCT Secretariat, effectively shutting out top officials, including the minister. However, as at the time of filing this report, there has been no official confirmation from the FCT Administration or the minister’s aides that Mr Wike was physically barred from entering his office.

Labour leaders had earlier issued an ultimatum to the FCT Administration over the non-payment of allowances, wage award arrears, promotions and other outstanding entitlements, warning that failure to address the grievances would lead to a total shutdown of services.

The strike marks an escalation of tensions between the FCTA workforce and the authorities, coming amid heightened political activity involving the minister and growing discontent among public sector workers in the nation’s capital.

Efforts to reach officials of the FCT Administration for comments were unsuccessful as at press time. The situation remains fluid, with indications that negotiations may resume if both sides agree to return to the table.

More details are expected as events unfold.
