Muslims engage in self denial as Ramadan arrives

The Ramadan fast,  a significant observance associated with the Islamic calendar has commenced throughout  the Muslim world.
It is a season devoted to helping the needy, embracing the notion of universal brotherhood, engaging in self denial and pursuit of austere habits.
Thursday, the Sultan of Sokoto announced the sighting of the moon, a major element which signals the takeoff  of the season.
This year’s Ramadan fast is coming against the backdrop of the COVID 19 which is at war with the human race.
Across the world, moslems are being enjoined to exhibit a high level of self hygiene and observe social distancing.
President Muhammadu Buhari charged Muslims to avoid large gatherings and limit the level of interpersonal socialization during the celebration.
“These are also challenging times for us all. In this Ramadan period, the kind of socializing you are used to now risks spreading the Coronavirus.
” Virtually all countries are advising citizens to avoid large gatherings and have their prayers and meals individually or with family at home. We must all refrain from usual Ramadan traditions such as group meals and congregational prayers, because of the Coronavirus.
But the President said the pandemic must not be used as an excuse not to participate in the Ramadan fast..
“I wish all Muslims in Nigeria and the world over all the blessings of the holy month”, President Buhari remarked.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Governor of Lagos State urged moslems, all over the country to pray for an end to the tormenting spread of the viru
“I welcome our Muslim brothers and sisters to the Holy month of Ramadan”, the governor noted, ” I urge you all to use this period of spiritual connection with the almighty Allah to pray for our dear State, our country and the entire world as we battle the novel #COVID19 pandemic.”
He appealed to Muslims to remain law abiding throughout the period and follow strict instructions on social distancing and proper hygiene.
