Imo Violence : Detectives swoop on dangerous gunmen; pick them from their hideouts
A massive crackdown on the hideouts of deadly gunmen responsible for the spread of terror in Imo State is underway.
Crack detectives are already on the trail of these hit men who are undermining the peace and security of the State, and reports coming from some local government areas in Imo indicate that arrests are being made.
Until the police launched the manhunt and spread its dragnet, the identities of the attackers were relatively unknown.
But the success story being recorded by the security agencies in Imo State and across the South East suggest that intelligence gathering may have been stepped up in the last few weeks.
Frank Mba, Force Public Relations Officer who hinted at this prospect while reacting to the interception of high caliber ammunition in Ebonyi disclosed that intelligence reports were helping the police with their investigation.
Among persons who are currently in police custody are suspected killers and arsonists accused of murdering policemen in cold blood as well as burning police stations and vehicles belonging to the force.
Also arrested are men believed to be connected to the devastating attack on the Correctional Centre in Owerri.
Recall that during the raid which took the nation and Imolites by surprise, over one thousand four hundred criminals escaped.
The Police is yet to come forward with accurate number of persons who are under arrest, but there are speculations that no less than 10 persons are in police net.
However, a National Newspaper (not the Telegraph) is quoting a police source as disclosing that over 12 accused persons are being held for their alleged roles in the disturbances which engulfed Imo State.
What is evident for now is that the police has picked a man known as Izuchukwu Ohaeri, aged 31 years.
Ohaeri was arrested at Isiwenke, Amakohia in Ihitte Uboma ‘ocal Government Area of Imo state.
He is suspected to have links with other persons who attacked the the Correctional Centre.
Others were picked up along the Oguta axis as well as other camps where the foot soldiers meet to strategize before storming targets in the State.
Meanwhile, the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma has returned to Owerri.
He has not been seen in Imo circles since after his home at Omuma was attacked by gunmen.
