The Independent National Electoral Commission has uncovered a clever plot to rig the forthcoming election in Anambra State.

The National Chairman of the Commission, Professor Mahmoud Yakubu said the electoral body has discovered incidents of multiple registration in its voters list in Anambra State.

He hinted that about 62,000 cases of double registration have been uncovered.

According to him, following the revelation, INEC would not issue new voters cards to persons who, despite their initial capture as voters, offered themselves as part of a plot to inflate Anambra’s voters register.

Anambra has come under the public spotlight because of widespread disturbances which have resulted in arson, murder and the destruction of property.

INEC which has suffered serious losses said it was worried about the safety of its facilities as well as its operatives.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Barrister Abubakar Malami, SAN, had warned that the declaration of a state of emergency in Anambra is most likely.

Malami expressed serious reservations over the security situation in that State, warning that the system would be forced to take drastic actions.

But the Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano who was in Abuja disclosed after he saw President Muhammadu Buhari that Malami’s threat, suggesting that the Federal Government would impose a state of emergency on his State, did not appear to enjoy presidential backing.

Thus far, INEC and the Federal Government are determined to ensure that the election billed for November holds.

Obiano is assuring that the unrest in Anambra would be quelled in a matter of days, saying the local people were not the ones behind by the  disturbances.
