Three aspirants out of the lot who have been jostling for attention in the build up to the gubernatorial race on the platform of the APC have appeared as strong front runners.
They are Tonye Dele Cole, a businessman and gubernatorial candidate of the APC in 2018;
Rt Hon Rotimi Amaechi, APC leader.
Dr Dawari George, a former member of the House of Representatives and one-time Commissioner under the Amaechi administration;
Dr Dakuku Peterside.
and Dr Dakuku Peterside, immediate past Director General of NIMASA and former member of the House of Representatives.
According to information, the party which is in opposition in Rivers State is to decide on who the flag bearer would be any moment from now.
Time is short, given the delay which was experienced in putting the Electoral Act in place.
There is serious pressure as well. As things are, all political parties are required at this time to meet guidelines set out by INEC for the selection of candidates and the purchase and return of forms.
Of the three that are being considered, only two aspirants, according to grapevine reports, have standing political structures.
Feelers emerging from the All Progressives Congress indicate that the party may have narrowed its selection list.
An insider who spoke with this publication at the weekend disclosed that the decision to zone the ticket to the Riverine parts of the State have been taken.
“The three men who have appeared at the head of the pack are being x-ray. One of them will eventually get the top job.”
It is not clear if the APC would go for primaries. It is possible that achieving a level of consensus on the choice of a gubernatorial candidate might be the preferred option.
While some think that the anointing may fall heavily on Pastor Tonye Cole, others perceive George instead of Peterside might make it to the finish line.
Dakuku who ran the race in 2015 has one of the most awesome structures on ground.
He equally has a huge war chest, Insiders say, but, the Opobo born politician might not be favored to emerge from the run of events.
“It is like Amaechi is determined to give the ticket to Cole. The man has no structure of his own.
“We are wondering how he made it to the last three”, a source within the party said.
Nobody has heard anything from Freedom House, Abe’s political structure which may not be done with seeking redress in court.
The group appears to be secretly nursing a plan to clinch the party’s governorship seat.
Many within the party are praying Abe does not acquire a form for the contest.
His exclusion without consulting him may pave the way for another round of trouble within the party.
