China: Torrential Rains Cause Rock, mud slide, claim two lives
Torrential rains in China’s North West region has resulted in an unexpected rock and mud slide which has led to the loss of lives and the destruction of public property.
The rock and mud slide occurred at the suburbs of Xi’an, capital of northwest China’s Shaanxi Province, Friday evening.
Two residential buildings housing an unspecified number of people as well as access routes in the area were severely damaged while bridges and power supply facilities were destroyed, following the incident.
The accident, local sources confirmed, took place as the rains came down hard on a village in Luanzhen Township on the outskirts of Chang’an District at around 6pm.
Xinhua News reported that at least two lives have been lost while 16 other persons are missing.
Rescue workers have saved four persons trapped under the rubble of a collapsed building.
According to sources within the local municipal emergency management unit in Xi’an, rescue work is continuing.
