Holy Father survives surgery at 84

Pope Francis, Pontiff of the Catholic Church, is out of danger after undergoing surgery on Sunday.

Millions of Catholics across the world have been worried by reports that the Pope was ill.

The Vatican had issued a statement Sunday, reassuring Catholics worldwide that the 84-year-old Pontiff has reacted well after surgery.

“The Holy Father reacted well to the surgery carried out under general anesthesia,” Matteo Bruni disclosed in a statement issued from the Holy See Communications Office.

The statement revealed that the procedure was “a scheduled surgical intervention for a symptomatic stenotic diverticulitis.”

Experts say Diverticulitis is an inflammation caused when people develop small sacs in the walls of the colon.

“The sacs or pouches”, according to a CNN report “are called diverticuli. It’s usually symptomless, but can cause discomfort and, sometimes, bleeding.”

The US National Institutes of Health explains that the ailment is a common condition which affects more than half of the adult population in the United States.

Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella has reacted to the news of the Pontiff ‘s surgery.

In a message shared on the presidency’s website Sunday, Mattarella wished the Pope a speedy recovery.

“Speaking on behalf of all Italians and of myself, we wish to send to Your Holiness our warm regards and the most cordial wishes for a good convalescence and speedy recovery,” the statement noted.
