No entry into US: Erring Nigerian officials barred

Secretary Antony Blinken

The United States has officially placed a ban on Nigerian officials who are being accused of undermining the growth of democracy in the most populous African country.

The ban which will impose travel restrictions on “specific individuals” is expected to deny them access to US visas.

Secretary Antony Blinken who announced the measure said the move was in line with the aspirations of the US Government to help strengthen the rule of law and build more efficient democratic institutions in Nigeria.

Blinken declared, “We have imposed visa restrictions on specific individuals who undermined the democratic process during Nigeria’s 2023 elections.

“We remain committed to supporting Nigerian aspirations to strengthen democracy and rule of law.”

Opposition figures in Nigeria have been campaigning for the imposition of stiff sanctions against alleged anti-democratic forces.

Following Secretary Blinken’s endorsement of travel restrictions, some people in Nigeria are obviously seeing it as a moral victory for the opposition and an indication that the US may in the long run take a tougher stance against African leaders who are part of what is regarded as “guided democracy.”

The social media is already awash with reactions to the US declaration, with some Nigerians suggesting that the measure has been long in coming.
