Umahi: Senators should give Nigeria a Xtian Senate President

By PHC Telegraph

Senator David Umahi has urged his colleagues in the red chamber to vote for the emergence of Godswill Akpabio as Nigeria’s next Senate President.

Umahi, the immediate past governor of Ebonyi State who appeared today on an Arise Television interview programme,  NewsDay, said the assumption in some quarters that there is an attempt to Islamize the country could be corrected by the election of Senator Akpabio as President of the Senate.

The Senator also argued that Akpabio’s choice as Senate President would remove the erroneous impression that the Muslim-Muslim ticket which runs the presidency has  created an imbalance in the distribution of sensitive positions in the country.

Senator Dave Umahi on Arise News making a strong case for the election of a Christian as Nigeria’s Senate President.

Umahi further insisted that the election of a Christian as the occupant of the third most influential position in the country would calm frayed nerves and help reduce the tendency by Nigerians to resort to religious bigotry.

Senator Umahi described President Bola Tinubu as a courageous leader, saying that the president has done what no Nigerian leader has done.

He expressed confidence that the President and the team that he is busy putting together would take the Nigerian people out of the current economic doldrums caused largely by leakages such as the petrol subsidy issue.

Meanwhile, an elder statesman and one-time Minister of  Information, Chief Edwin Clark has asked Senators to vote for Godswill Akpabio as their presiding officer.

Urging members of the upper legislative house to show leadership and understanding, Clark remarked, “It is your duty as the legislative arm of government to produce during your term, a united country where the citizens genuinely trust one another, and regard themselves as equal citizens and as brothers and sisters.”

He added, “It is time to heal our land, and in so doing, what I expect of the 10th senate is to give the position of the senate president to a Christian senator from the southern part of the country.”
