Breaking news: Emefiele to face two-count charge for illegal possession of firearm

Godwin Emefiele, former CBN Governor to face new two-count charge for illegally possessing firearms.

 

The Federal Government has filed a two-count charge against the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

Emefiele is being accused of illegally possessing fire arms and rounds of live ammunition.

The Federal Government in the charge sheet accused Emefiele of possessing a single-barreled shotgun without a licence as required by law.

The Government insisted that his action was in complete contravention of Section Four of the Firearms Act, Cap 28, Laws of the Federation 2004 punishable under section 27, sub section 1(b) of the same act.

Under Section 8 of the same act, the former CBN governor is also accused of having 123 rounds of live ammunition cartridges in his possession as at the time he was arrested by the DSS about a month ago.

The Government said Emefiele’s action was punishable under Section 27 of the Firearms Act.

The matter is expected to be heard by a judge next week.

Earlier, a court had ordered the release of Emefiele if it is unable to bring a formal and appropriate charge against him.

Recall that Emefiele had been picked up shortly after he was deposed as the CBN governor by President Bola Tinubu.

Under his watch, Nigerians were made to throughvthe crucible, following the sudden introduction of new currency notes and the naira squeeze that accompanied it.
