It would be the first time, in several working years, that heads of the security cartel which ran the show under the Buhari administration would stay back at home.
Their assignments as heads of the Army, Navy, Air Force, the Police and other security arms are over.
An order issued by the Presidency late Monday in the name of the President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the high ranking officers charged with the task of keeping Nigerians safe have been fired.
Their removal from office by the President did not come completely as a surprise.
Not many ordinary Nigerians who are constantly exposed to danger everyday in parts of the country are satisfied with the handling of serious security matters by the retired chiefs.
The war against insurgency which have cost Nigeria so much in both men and other resources has not been won.
Steadily, the North East where Boko Haram fighters have remained embedded, the South East where a separatist movement exists, the North West that now has its share of bandits, cattle rustlers and Fulani militias, and the North Central which has turned into a hotbed of escalating insecurity under their watch.
Asari Dokubo, leader of the Niger Delta Volunteer Force, had literally accused the Armed Forces of sabotaging the war against insurgency.
Dokubo said the nation was being deceived to think that the security agencies were not properly equipped to fight.
His revelation of what is playing out in the Niger Delta was even more damning. He said that top military men posted to the oil rich region have become soldiers of fortune.
Efforts by the military establishment to protect its own and cast aspersions on Asari’s assertion came a mite too late.
The President named a new team to commence the task of forging a new security architecture for the nation.
Members of the new security team include Nuhu Ribadu who has been named the National Security Adviser (NSA).
Others are Maj. General C G Musa, Chief of Defense Staff who reportedly hails from Southern Kaduna in the North West, Major General T. A Lagbaja, Chief of Army Staff, Rear Admiral E. I. Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff, Air Vice Marshall H.B. Abubakar, Chief of Airstaff, Major General Ekpa, Chief of Defense Intelligence and DIG Egbetokun, Inspector General of Police.
Insiders say that a putsch is gradually taking place within the system.
In the meantime, all board appointments put in place by President Muhammadu Buhari have been thrown out.
“It is game over for Buhari loyalists in the Armed Forces and the Police”, a politician volunteered in a chat with the Telegraph.
“Tinubu is moving strongly to consolidate power in his two hands. He is also moving to clean the mess that has been left behind for him to deal with”, the politician who spoke under anonymous conditions concluded.
