The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Brigadier General Buba Marwa says the North West zone is placed 4th in the country in terms of illicit drug consumption.
Warwa who spoke on Monday disclosed this fact while delivering an address at the flag off of a campaign designed to halt the spread of illicit drugs in Nigeria’s Northwest co-sponsored by the House of Representatives.
Providing statistics, the NDLEA chairman disclosed that the Southwest geopolitical region sits at the top of the illicit – drug- consumption ladder.
He hinted that the the South South, Nigeria’s oil producing belt, is second while the South East where a campaign for the creation of a State of Biafra is currently going on is placed third.

Marwa hinted that Kano State has the highest illegal drug consumption rate in the whole of Northern Nigeria.
According to him, NDLEA’s survey show that one million people do hard drugs in Kano.
He acknowledged that the drug problem has become rampant within the north and said the intervention launched to arrest the ugly situation is a welcome development.
The NDLEA chief said that in addition to demands for certificates showing couples do not suffer from immune deficiency problems, parents should ask those who want to marry their daughters to carry out drug tests.
As he put it, some acts of domestic violence in homes are traceable to drug use.
Marwa urged Governments of Northern states to establish rehabilitation centres for victims of drug abuse and intensify the war against hard drugs, saying such drugs have negative impacts on health and economic activity.
He said it was not all the time that the NDLEA drags people to prison, urging persons with drug related problems who want a way out to approach the agency for help.
